Reflections

Last year at this time I had worked with Blake and Crystal. These two were such fun people and such a unique couple. I had such a blast working with them and have so many memories of their wedding. One of which I remember walking into the reception and BLOWN away at the decorations. Everything was handmade and rustic and it looked amazing and went well with their theme. I also remember the assembling of the bouquets the day of the wedding as they were finished pretty much right when the wedding started… talk about timing. But these two were so special and their wedding party was an absolute BLAST to work with.

I got to know Blake and Crystal pretty well as we drove down to St. Louis together to do their engagement session. What a fun time it was. We spent a few hours walking around the Arch landing and found SO many amazing photo opportunities, but more than that we got to know each other on such a personal level, by the time their wedding came around they hardly felt like wedding clients but rather good friends. This is when the branding of my business started to take a very different turn. I wanted it to reach this point of course, but Blake and Crystal kind of kicked of my branding of more than just great  pictures, but a great relationship as well. They were also the first wedding to end my days of using discs. That’s a long story, but I no longer work with discs because of how unreliable they are and how frustrating it can be when you try three times to pass pictures on a disc. Everything is handled online through a cloud now, so no more worries of faulty/scratched discs.:)Overall though, these two were so much fun, I can’t say enough about them. Happy Anniversary Blake and Crystal!!

Kristen & Kory // Busch Stadium Engagement Photography

What a day – the weather could not be anymore perfect that it was today. After have a couple weeks of mid-80s and humid, we finally got a break and when we started our shoot at Busch Stadium the temperature was 60 degrees and a slight breeze! It was amazing. We started our day off pretty early since it’s about a 1.5 hour drive to St. Louis if traffic is moving, plus just in case it was warm I wanted to start the shoot at 9:00 so we could catch the cooler part of the day. If any of you have ever been to a baseball game when it’s hot, you know how miserable it can get with all that concrete reflecting the heat back up. This was my second time walking the halls to the field of Busch Stadium, and it was again just as cool as it was the first time. A little better for me, personally, since all those first time jitters were gone, but still just as exciting. The thing I love about shoots at Busch Stadium or similar places is even if you don’t like baseball, the Cardinals or whatever kind of sport or team’s venue we are at, it’s still a unique session that doesn’t happen all the time – and I LOVE unique.:)Especially for couples around this area, not many others will have such an amazing set of engagement pictures to hang on their walls.

After an amazing shoot at Busch, we finished of Kristen and Kory’s engagement shoot back at the Effingham Country Club. Again, this was a first-time for me as I’ve not been out to the Country Club before, and as we drove around in our golf cart to the different locations, the photo opportunities were endless! And there was such a variety, from a stone waterfall, to smooth cut grass, a lone path through the trees, and praire type grass even. On top of this, Kristen and Kory were SO much fun to work with. You can tell a huge difference in couples where pictures matter just some and pictures matter more than almost the wedding itself. I don’t want to speak for Kristen, but I was kind of getting the feeling that she was the latter of those two personalities, and I LOVE it! I was also a huge fan of shooting at the country club, something about being in the environment of golf seemed to put a relaxing vibe in the air (although, I know for some of you, golf is probably far from relaxing. Don’t worry I’m right there with ya!), and if any of you know anything of photography, it definitely helps to have a relaxed couple to photograph. I can’t say enough of these two though, working with them at Busch, riding around in the golf cart and chatting it up pretty much all day, Kristen and Kory are definitely a unique and fun couple and I can’t wait to photograph their big day.

Reflections + A Happy Anniversary

I can’t believe how fast time flies by. It’s hard to think that next month will be 3 years since I shot my first wedding. Obviously that isn’t that long ago, but it feels like it is because SO much has happened. Two years ago today, I was honored to be a part of the wedding of Jamie and Brad. These two were such a fun couple to work with and I still remember Jamie’s easy going and fun personality throughout the day of. So I just want to say a HUGE congratulations on two years to Brad and Jamie – can you believe it’s already been two years?! I can’t!

In the past two years I look at the weddings I have photographed and where this business of wedding photography has been and where it’s going. Because of amazing couples like Jamie and Brad, I’m truly doing my dream job. Having the ability to photography such happy memories in peoples lives is definitely an honor, and I’m so appreciative of all the couples I’m able to work with. 2010 was really my breakthrough year. I started shooting weddings in the summer of 2009 and I was so blessed to be able to book a few more weddings throughout that year. But in 2010 I started to book a good number of weddings and other types of sessions and also started to see some potential in the business. Since Jamie’s wedding two years ago, we’ve had the priveldge of working with 32 other couples on their big day.

Two years ago, I was still working strictly out of home, meeting couples at Starbucks and anywhere else we could meet, and I was saying if I could just have a studio… half a year later I was moving into a studio where I could show off my work and meet with so many amazing people! I feel tremendously blessed and could not thank God more for the position I am in today, and to all the couples that I’ve had the opportunity to work with in the past and future, from the bottom of my heart I’m forever thankful for you allowing me to have this opportunity. I definitely look forward to the future to what it holds and cannot wait for what’s in store. Happy Tuesday everyone.:)

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY JAMIE AND BRAD!!

Jade & Matt // Shelbyville, IL Engagement Photography

I received an email the morning of the shoot from Matt saying that he hoped the weather would miss us, and I checked the weather (nervously) to find out there was a 30% chance of rain. Thankfully in Illinois 30% is the equivalent of 0%.:)So I had no worries about the shoot, that was until I was making my way up to Lake Shelbyville in Shelbyville, IL and it started raining on me. Yikes! Thankfully, though, it was not raining in Shelbyville, and everything turned out perfect. The clouds provided some of the best lighting, and the greens and yellows of spring just popped! Absolutely loved the colors!

Jade and Matt were such a fun couple to work with. The thing I LOVE about engagement sessions is that it allows me to get to know the couple on a more personal level and vice versa. And of course by getting to know each other, when it comes time for the wedding day photography, we almost have more of a friendship rather than a “professional relationship”. Matt even went on to say how comfortable they felt during the shoot and it was just a great way to break the ice. Aside from why I love engagement shoots, as I was saying earlier, Jade and Matt were so much fun and just a really special couple. As they posed with each other the love they have for one another shines and of course this makes for GREAT pictures.

Cannot wait till the big day but until then, we’ll leave you with some pictures of their engagement session.:)

Your Logo // is it that important?

I’m pretty sure that you are probably thinking that the title of this blog is about the easiest question, of course your blog is important. But let me clarify what I mean. Obviously as a business your logo is extremely important. it’s what defines your business and it’s brand. I’m pretty sure we could all point out a Chevy logo, or Toyota logo, Taco Bell, McDonalds, etc without seeing the words, right? As photographers, our logos should be the same, but as photographers a large part of advertising our business is through facebook. Should it be the only way? Not at all and it should never be considered your official website (trust me, I’ve seen it). Because we take pictures of people and post them to facebook, it’s pretty obvious that they will want to share these pictures and even make it their profile picture and often times when they make it their profile picture they will crop it one way or another, thus eliminating your logo. Is this really a big deal?

I’ve seen a lot of photographers on facebook, I think close to 10-20 of photographers I follow, include a disclaimer with their pictures along the lines of “We would love for you to share our images, but do NOT crop the pictures in any way or eliminate our logo.” Something like that. Maybe it’s just me, but often times this statement puts a bad taste in my mouth. I feel like it’s such a negative statement and almost harsh, especially since most of them capitalize NOT. It’s like I’m being punished before I even share the pictures. And so I got to thinking, is it really that big of deal of the picture is cropped or the logo is cropped out? And that led me to the question, why are the cropping picture?

I concluded that most cases a person will crop a picture simply because of the logo? Other rarer instances might be because they just want a close up picture of their face for their profile pictures. But I think more times than none it’s because of the logo. By this I mean that the logo is probably extremely busy and it’s almost distracting from the picture it’s self. Don’t even get me started on the watermarks that take up the entire picture (eek!). So again, is it really that important? This is just my opinion, but here’s my take. The person sharing or posting the picture probably likes the pictures enough that they will spread some love for you. And after posting it, they will probably receive comments, “I love this, who took these?” And they will share your name. In my opinion, these word of mouth is going to do far more than your logo stamped on the picture. If someone saw your logo, chances are they aren’t going to search you on facebook. People are lazy, this is the first thing I learned in web design, if people have to search, scroll, etc. they will not do it. But if someone shares your name with a friend, you better believe they’ll search you because now they’ve been given a reason. Better yet, why don’t you have that person tag your business name to the pictures? Then you’re just a click away?

The truth is, by putting the picture on facebook or other social network sites, you’ve got to understand that chances are it will be cropped, altered, stolen, etc. It’s the Internet and if you are so concerned about anything happening to your pictures don’t post them? You’ll spend way too much time and effort trying to police people to not alter your pictures in anyway, and I don’t know about you, but I’d rather be shooting/editing than policing.:)Sure it’s a bummer when the pictures are altered, just recently I saw a couple alter my pictures through what looked like Picnik or some kind of program like that. Completely ruined the pictures, but in this case, thankfully my logo was cropped out. It could always be worse. If you are concerned about it still, and you still want to post them online, maybe you need to look at your logo and maybe that’s the reason people are cropping your pictures, I’ll give some examples below:

So obviously this first example is the busy type. Don’t hate on me, I didn’t want to spend an hour on this logo just for an example, but I’m sure you catch my drift. Super busy and it takes away from the picture.

Now I’m sure this is everyone’s favorite. HA Surprisingly, I’ve seen photographers do this on facebook. Is this really a picture you expect clients to share with friends/family? I don’t know about you, but I definitely wouldn’t want that. Even if you are using online proofing? Just do a simple watermark in the bottom corner. I’m pretty sure I would rather share/order  a picture that wasn’t as distracting as this.

This is what we currently use on facebook. Although, I’m pulling away from this I think. It’s not as distracting, sure it takes up a portion of the picture, but like this one and most pictures I post, it never really gets in the way. You can’t tell it on this particular picture, but the gray is a low opacity black, so when there is part of the image behind it, it’s easy to see. This is a sleeker, more modern approach to presenting your logo on your pictures.

This is the version I think we are going to be moving to soon. White background will have a faded black logo and dark backgrounds a faded white logo. Very minimalistic, doesn’t take away from the picture at all, and I think the chances of clients not altering this picture would be very low.

Anyway, this blog is only meant to give you something to think about. I’m not saying one way is right and the other wrong – that’s the great thing about this industry, if something works for you then keep it.:)But if you find yourself spending more time policing facebook to be sure your name is presented on your pictures, is that really the type of branding you want to present? Just some food for though. Have a great day today.
